Southeast

Parents and Teachers Empowerment
Network
It takes a village
to raise a child - African
proverb
The Parents and Teachers Empowerment Network
(P-TEN) emphasizes increasing parents’ family leadership
skills, involvement in their children’s education, and
mutual support. The Network provides opportunities for
parents to obtain parenting and other leadership skill
training, connect with other parents to provide mutual
support, and cooperative promotion of their children’s
success. It also offers teachers the opportunity to
share with parents helpful information on the children’s
progress and on ways to support their learning, and
serves as a ready resource for SCF to obtain classroom
volunteers, assistance with field trips and fundraising.
The P-TEN was created for parents of children attending
the Southeast Children’s Fund Child Development Center
and its sister center, Sunshine Early Learning Center,
and the two centers’ child care provider staffs. The
goals of the P-TEN are to:
- Create ways for parents to support each other in
parenting, learning, achieving and living • Help parents
to effectively provide for their families
- Give them the tools and opportunities to advocate
for their children’s education and positive development
- Increase interactions between parents and their
children
- Provide teachers a venue in which they can share
with parents information on their children’s progress
and encourage parent involvement in the schools’ activities
- Create an environment of leadership, advocacy and
mutual support among group members
The P-TEN holds formal meetings six times
a year, but the executive and ad hoc committees and
support groups, formed to address specific activities
and interests, meet more frequently -- depending on
need and by consensus agreement.
